Homemade Greenhouse!

MK # 3 and 4 posted something really cool!

Read on......

Just as soon as we were losing hope, we discovered a tiny sprout surfacing of MK# 4.  Subhanallah, we all got soooo excited.
Previously, we had just planted the seeds and left them by the window.  We watered them everyday and recorded our observations (no much, however :(  ).  Then we realized it was too cold by the window and the water was drying up too quickly.  So, we decided to convert our regular pots into mini individual greenhouses by covering each pot with a clear Dixie Cup.  And voila!  The soil remained moist and the  environment inside probably became warmer...becoming more ideal for the seeds to sprout.  With a new sense of hope, we are hanging in there and "rooting" for the remaining seeds to sprout (pun intended!  lol).
Here are 2 pictures we would like to share!

RCHE TEAM: Congratulations! Thanks for sharing your cool idea!

Sprouting Egg Carton Garden

According to MK # 65, 66, 70 and 71:

We missed checking our plants on day 8. On day 9 we were very pleased to see all their pots sprouting accept for one.

Infact MK # 65 even had all three seeds sprouting in one pot ! We surely have a happy sprouter there. :)

MK # 70 who is the youngest sprouter among the four of us, has a tiny sprout in one. Though MK # 70 is only 3 years old, still says, "I want to win!" and is anxiously waiting for more seeds to sprout.

aaaaaawwwww!!!

Here is our update.  We had growth beginning on the 5th day and today, the 9th day, we have 1 pot with three stalks and 1 pot with 1 stalk.  We watered them from the top, but from a spray bottle so that it was gentle.

Congratulations !

It's All About the Care

MK # 13 proved that having the seeds sprout is all about care and the proper environment and not just planting on the right date.

MK # 13 planted a day late but saw their first sprouts on the 6th day!

Congratulations !

Sprouting with Fertilizers MK 3 27,28

Learning About Fertilizers

MK # 27 and 28 have experience with different fertilizers and they included it in their sprouting contest.

Here's what they had to share:

Day 1

The kids planted their seeds and fertilized each of their plants with two different types of fertilizer.  The plants (plant 1)with the numbered markers were fertilized with a natural kelp (seaweed fertilizer) and the plants without the number markers were fertilized with an organic fish emulsion (we will call these plant 2 insha'allah).

They have been lightly watering the plants everyday just to keep the soil moist.

Day 5

The plants were placed by the window under a ceiling vent with indirect sunlight.  The plants didn't sprout until day 5 and measured a 1/2 cm in height.

Day 8

The plants had grown significantly and #28 (plant 1) still has only one sprout, but is the largest at 3 1/2 cm (this is the one fertilized with kelp) and plant 2 has two sprouts, the tallest of which is 2 1/2 cm (this is the one fertilized with the fish emulsion).  Also on day 8, #27 had also seen a large spurt in growth.  Plant 1 has two sprouts, and the tallest measures 2 1/2 cm and plant 2 also has two sprouts that appear very healthy and strong and the tallest of which is 3cm.

The kids were so excited this morning to see how much their plants had grown in a short period.  Insha'allah they will continue to monitor the growth and report back.

Jazaki'allahu khayran for this fun and educational contest!

RCHE Spring Sprout team:

Wa Iyyakum. It's our pleasure.  We are very happy to know that your are are enjoying the contest. Thank you for sharing your findings as many will benefit from your experience.

First Sprouts Already! MK # 18,19,20

Find out what
 MK # 18, MK #19 and MK #20
did?

Read below.......

Mother of MK # 18, MK #19 and MK #20 sent the following picture and wrote:

This was taken on the first day of planting. mk# 18, mk #19 and mk #20 have just finished planting their seeds. I placed the plant pots in a loaf pan and my little sprouters watered the seeds from the bottom (pouring water into the pan and not directly on top of the soil). I then covered the pan with cling wrap and put it on top of the fridge. This was done to give the seeds the warmth and humidity they needed to soften and crack open.

Everyone is super excited!

4 days later!

Here is a picture of our plant pots on day 4. As you can see, our seeds have sprouted and we see tiny seedlings growing! yay!
I forgot to put the white sticks into the pots, so from left to right you will see the plant pots of mk # 20, mk # 19 and mk # 18.

GREAT JOB MK # 18, MK #19 and MK #20!

Looks like many of us will be covering ours with cling wrap too now!

Sprouter Comments MK # 16

We have been getting messages about comments made by young sprouters about their kits and the contest:

We''ll be updating more here. For now see what Sprouter MK # 16 had to say:

On getting the kit:

"I will take a LOT OF CARE of my plant!

On being told there will be a prize for healthiest plant:

Ever so inniocently: "What will be the prize? Tomatoes?"

RCHE Spring Sprout Contest Team:

"Dear MK # 16. God will surely give you the gift of tomatoes when you care for it ever so tenderly. That's a given Inshallah! But if your care also yields the HEALTHIEST plant we would LOVE to give you a prize too!"

HAPPY GROWING!

The Kit

Understanding The Kit

Everyone who has registered for the RCHE Spring Sprouts Contest
will receive a kit. If you haven't picked up yours yet, then please hurry up as the planting date is APRIL 15th. Once you have a kit you need to understand how to use it. So here's the tutorial for you.

THE KIT

A brown paper bag with your kit code number and an RCHE Spring Sprouters Contest info sheet.

THE INFO SHEET

The info sheet briefly mentions the contents of the RCHE Spring Sprout Contest Starter Kit, and mentions the following web addresses and email address for you to follow up with the contest and other sprouters.

Web Address

Email

INSIDE THE KIT

There are 5 things inside the kit.
  1. a bag of Seed Starting Soil
  2. a pair of bio-degradable pots
  3. a bag with tomato seeds
  4. a T label (white stick)
  5. a growth chart sheet
Please read details below:

THE SOIL

To help your seeds germinate well, we have provided you with special seed starting soil (potting mix). We  have used The "Miracle Gro Seed Starting". This potting mix provides:
  • improved drainage to help prevent disease
  • ph balanced for optimal seed growth

THE POTS

You will find 2 biodegradable pots in your kit. Each has your kit code written on it. You will use both pots to plant the seeds. These pots have been used to facilitate your planting outdoors, as you can replant your sprout into a bigger pot or in your garden patch WITH this pot. This will ensure ease in planting and no damage to roots. (God Willing)

DO LOOK AT THE PLANTING RESOURCES for TOMAMTO SEEDS

THE SEEDS

In your kit you have received 6 seeds. We got the McKenzie Tomato Bush Beef Steak seeds. The code on your kit MK actually stands for McKenzie (seeds).

Please note that not all seeds germinate. Nonetheless you may have 2 - 4 of your seeds sprouting (God Willing).

THE LABEL

The white stick or T label is to mark your plant once you shift it to a bigger pot, as your jiffy pot will be submerged in the soil. So make sure you don't loose this stick. The stick has your kit code on one side. The other side can hold your name and your homeschooling group if you belong to one, like RCHE (Real's Cool Home Educators), TMH (Toronto Muslim Homeschoolers), LM (L'il Mu'min Playgroup) etc

THE GROWTH CHART

As important as all the things in your kit are, the growth chart has it's own importance. You have been provided with 1 sheet covering your observations for 2 weeks. To continue charting the growth  of your plant you can print more sheets from this link:

PLEASE NOTE: File your growth charts as you will have to submit them at the end of the contest. Your careful recordings will help the judges determine the care you took in maintaining your plants.

BONUS POINTS:

You can receive bonus points if you research and find benefits of "Tomato" as well as important points about planting and growing plants from Quran, Hadith and/or other Scriptures.
You will also be required to submit these at the end of the contest.
